Our mission is to strengthen our community and inspire students who have systematically lacked exposure to the medical profession, to find joy and excitement in learning about the art of neuroscience and medicine. The program hopes to deliver an early intervention to inspire inner-city high schoolers to consider training and education paths that prepare them for careers in clinical neuroscience and neurosurgery.

The brainstormers program focuses on exciting topics in neuroscience and neurology that present opportunities for high school students to easily interface with the field in an afternoon. The sessions occur once per month on a Wednesday afternoon.

Our 8-session curriculum includes topics spanning the road to residency, cranial and spine trauma, awake brain surgery, stroke treatment, seizures, and bioethics. We are always looking for new topics and interactive sessions! If you have a suggestion, don’t hesitate to get in contact with us. . The full neuroscience workforce encompasses physicians, advanced practice providers, OR staff, nurses, electrophysiology technicians, radiation technicians, medical assistants, industry representatives, and scientists. Our residents engage professionals from all of these positions and introduce them in sessions so students can see opportunity where it fits best for each of them.

A short case-based interactive session is led by the residents to start the program, followed by a longer interactive portion focusing on practical skills, simulations, and demonstrations of technology supported by industry vendors who supply the Neurosurgery department on CCF main campus. At the end, 20 minutes of unstructured time is included in the lesson plan to allow for direct mentorship between the residents and the students.

The sessions are held on Wednesday afternoons at 3:30 PM in Room 374 at Cleveland School of Science and Medicine, once per month! Keep your eyes on our website and social media for the theme and specific date each month.
